Want to stop apps from using your personal data on Facebook? Here's how

A recent expose has highlighted how Facebook is using our personal data to make money. The company provides access to a great deal of data about users to advertisers and even third-party apps on Facebook.

You can follow these steps to limit how much of your data third-party apps can use.

If you are using Facebook on desktop or mobile:

  • Go to Facebook’s app settings page
  • Below Apps, Websites and Plugins, click Edit
  • Then click Disable Platform

If you are using the Facebook app on Android:

  • Open the app and tap the three horizontal lines icon on the top-right
  • Scroll down and tap Settings & privacy
  • Tap Account settings. Tap Apps. Then tap Platform. Tap Edit, followed by Turn off Platform

If you are using the Facebook app on iOS:

  • Open the app and tap the three horizontal lines icon at the bottom-right.
  • Scroll down and tap Settings. Tap Account Settings.
  • Scroll down to Apps
  • Tap Platform, followed by Edit, and then tap Turn off Platform.

This will remove all third-party apps from your Facebook profile. This will affect how you use other apps. So if you use Facebook to sign in to apps or websites, this will disable that. You will have to reset your password on all these apps and websites. You will also lose access to any apps on Facebook that you may use.

If this is too drastic, you can limit the information third-party apps can use on Facebook.

Follow these steps if you access Facebook via a desktop or mobile browser:

  • Go to Facebook’s app settings page on the website.
  • Scroll down to Apps Others Use.
  • Click Edit
  • Uncheck everything
  • Click Save

If you are using the Facebook app on Android:

  • Open the app and tap the three horizontal lines icon on the top-right.
  • Scroll down and tap Settings & privacy
  • Tap Account settings
  • Tap Apps
  • Tap Apps others use
  • Uncheck everything

If you use Facebook for iOS:

  • Open the app and tap the three horizontal lines icon at the bottom-right.
  • Scroll down and tap Settings
  • Tap Account Settings
  • Scroll down to Apps
  • Tap Apps others use
  • Uncheck everything
