Steve Smith steps down as Rajasthan Royals IPL captain, Ajinkya Rahane to replace him

Australia's cricket captain Steve Smith has stepped down as captain of the Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals. This is a result of the ball tampering controversy that Smith has admitted to.

India's top-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane has been named Smith's replacement to lead the 2008 IPL winners in the 11th edition of the tournament. Smith felt that under the given circumstances, it would be best to step down, said sources.

Rajasthan Royals has said that it will do everything possible to protect the values and the integrity of the game. They also said that what happened was wrong.

The Royals will be making a comeback in this year's IPL after they were stopped playing the league in the last two years due to betting allegations. Smith became captain in February this year. He was a part of the Rajasthan Royals in 2014 and 2015.

Smith and another Australian player have admitted to ball tampering during the ongoing Australia-South Africa series.
