Troubled by stressed out doctors', All India Institute of Medical Sciences to open wellness clinic
India's top medical college and hospital, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), has decided to open a wellness clinic for its medical students and doctors.
The clinic will have a team of psychologists and vocational counsellors. Their role is to help medical professionals deal with stress.
Every year, at least one doctor at AIIMS attempts suicide. The most recent case was from a few weeks back. This was the case of a 36-year-old PhD student in the microbiology department who tried to kill himself by overdosing on drugs. He had accused his supervisor of mental harassment.
The plan is to have two psychologists and a vocational counsellor to begin with. This will be expanded later. A 24X7 helpline for medical students and doctors will also be launched.
Many students coming from rural areas struggle to cope with the academic burden. Senior residents are stressed out due to long working hours and lack of hostel facilities.
The other issue is that doctors' have limited time to socialize. This leads to isolation and loneliness.
