Kerala Health Minister visits elderly patient abused by hospital nurse
Three days after a nursing assistant at the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital abused an elderly patient, Kerala Health Minister K K Shylaja visited the patient at his home in Punalur.
The minister promised the patient, Vasu, treatment free of cost. She has also given instructions that further medical assistance be given to him at the Punalur Taluk Hospital itself.
The report of the abuse went viral on social media after another patient shot the incident on his phone. The video showed a nursing assistant, identified as R Sunilkumar, twisting and snapping Vasu's fingers.
The Health Minister’s office has suspended the nursing assistant ordered a detailed probe into the incident.
Vasu was admitted to the hospital on 19 February for treatment after a fall while climbing a coconut tree. He is the sole breadwinner for his family and climbs coconut trees for a living.
Vasu’s grandson had to stop going to school due to financial difficulties. The minister has promised to bear the expenses of the child's education. She has directed the local gram panchayat to complete the paperwork for this quickly.
