Depression, schizophrenia are common complaints at Mumbai civic hospitals
A recent study by the Brihanmumbai Muncipal Corporation (BMC) says that 31% of people who visited civic hospitals in Mumbai between October 2015 and September 2017 sought help for mental illnesses. This makes mental health a huge concern amongst Mumbaiikars.
KEM, Sion, Nair, and Cooper are the four civic hospitals that were taken up for the survey. The patients sought help for illnesses like depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, phobias, and panic attacks.
Patients with diabetes and hypertension came next in line.
In fact, 1,884 people with mental illnesses had visited these civic hospitals in just a week’s time! Schizophrenia was the highest reported, followed by depression.
People with chronic diseases like heart problems and diabetes also have mental disorders. Most of the times, they are diagnosed with chronic depression.
In the past few years, there has been a growing awareness about mental health. People are getting to know more about mental health, and are ready to seek help for it.
