Para-athlete Suvarna Raj slams Delhi Passport office for being inaccessible
The Passport Seva Kendra located in ITO New Delhi is in the news for being inaccessible for disabled people.
The issue has been highlighted by para athlete Suvarna Raj. who is also a disability rights activist.
Suvarna says that she and her husband, Pradeep Raj, underwent a terrible experience at the ITO passport office. Pradeep, who is also disabled, was treated badly by officials at the Passport Seva Kendra.
The couple visited the passport office to get a passport for their son. Both of them could not access the buildings.
When Pradeep asked for help, one person was sent to lift Suvarna's wheelchair. No one else came forward from the office to help.
Suvarna Raj says that a building like the passport office, which is visited by a lot of disabled people, must be made accessible at the earliest. The narrow staircases of the building do not help people with disabilities.
Senior officials at the passport office said they did not have technical experts to handle lifts and other such facilities. As a result, disabled people visiting the office have to rely on people working there to even enter the premises.
