Depression in elderly may cause dementia
A study found that older people who are depressed are more prone to dementia. Dementia is a brain disorder and has symptoms like loss of memory and ability to think.
Short term depression is not harmful but longer period of depression increases the risk of dementia. It was also found that rapidly increasing depression in old age could be a sign that the person is at an early stage of dementia.
The study was done by Erasmus University Medical Center, Netherlands on 3,325 adults aged 55 and above. Elderly people tend to get depressed due to lack of activities, illnesses and loss of loved ones.
