Government passes ordinance giving death sentence to rapists of children
The central government has given its approval to an ordinance that will allow courts to give death penalty to those convicted of raping children.
The death penalty will be given to the rapists of children aged below 12 years.
An ordinance is a law that is passed when the Parliament is not in session.
The current laws give out a maximum punishment of life imprisonment, and a minimum of a seven-year jail term.
However, the issue of severe punishment has been raised from all corners of the country for rapists of children.
There has been a rise in sexual crimes against minors and the death penalty is expected to deter others from committing such crimes.
The rapes in Kathua and Unnao have rocked the country calling for a more serious decisions to be taken regarding punishments.
