Doctors from AIIMS will look for cancer patients in old age homes
Doctors at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)are starting an initiative to help the senior citizens with cancer.
They will reach out to senior citizens living in old age homes and conduct cancer checks. This will be followed up with treatment.
The aim of the programme is to focus on elderly people over the age of 60 years with cancer and pneumonia.
More than 60% of cancer cases are detected in patients above 60 years of age.
There is more scope for effective treatment and cure in cases that are detected early.
However, in most cases the patients visit the hospitals at a later stage and the condition becomes incurable.
AIIMS doctors are hoping to create more awareness about cancer in older people so that the disease can be detected early and treated on time.
