13 children killed after speeding train crashes into school van
Thirteen people were killed and eight more injured after a speeding train crashed into a school van they were travelling in.
The incident took place at an unmanned crossing in Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
The van of Divine Public School was carrying nearly 25 students and was passing through the crossing when it got stuck on the tracks. It was hit by the train.
Thirteen children were killed on the spot. The wounded children and staff were taken to a hospital around 30 km from the site.
The train was on its way to Gorakhpur from Siwan. Railway officials say that there was an alert given to the van to stop but it was too late. The van driver did not listen.
Most of the children in the van were below 10 years of age. The van was badly smashed on impact.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of Rs two lakh for the families of the children.
