Bengaluru institutions come together to conduct largest mental health study in India
Two Bengaluru-based institutions have come together to carry out the largest mental health study in India. The two institutions are the National Centre for Biological Sciences-Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (NCBS-inStem) and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS).
They will work on an integrated approach to probe the genetic and environmental factors leading to mental disorders.
Such a study has not been done even in countries like the United Kingdom and the United States.
The study will focus on disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s among others. It will involve nearly 4,500 people.
A 2014 health ministry survey shows that 13% of India’s population is affected by some form of mental health. Nearly 3% are prone to mental disorders.
The main aim of the study is to combine clinical medicine with basic research into mental illnesses.
