Caregivers are at high risk of depression say experts

Caregivers are far more vulnerable to depression than other people, say experts.

There are many reasons like physical, emotional, financial, or social stress involved. This makes caregivers up to 15 times more at risk of depression.

This is especially true for caregivers of bedridden patients, patients with chronic illnesses like cancer, dementia, or schizophrenia, say experts.

Apart from the heavy demands involved in taking care of patients with chronic illnesses, there is a sense of duty and guilt.

Many of these illnesses are not curable and the constant effort leads to no positive results. This makes it hard for caregivers to cope. It leaves them drained of emotional energy and they end up feeling up feeling lonely and depressed.

Even professional caregivers have a hard time as they often don't get empathy.
