Celebrities & diplomats take part in Kolkata awareness walk on vision impairment
More than 550 people came together in Kolkata to walk to promote awareness on avoidable blindness and vision impairment.
The event saw the participation of diplomats, government officials, as well as cultural and sports personalities. They walked blindfolded for the cause, which was titled Walk in the Dark.
Organizers said that the participants walked blindfolded in order to know the difficulties faced by the blind.
There are over 50 million people with vision impairments in India. The Indian economy loses Rs 1,26,500 crore due to uncorrected vision problems. There is a need to spread greater awareness in India about how to take care of vision impairment.
The walk was held at the iconic Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata. The event as flagged off by Harinder Sidhu, who is the High Commissioner from Australia to India.
Eminent personalities like chess Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua, hockey player Gurbux Singh, percussionist Bickram Ghosh, and actor Victor Banerjee took part in the walk.
