Over 14 cities from India on the list of world's most polluted cities
More than 14 cities in India are amongst the world’s most polluted ones. Kanpur tops the list from India. The report was released by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Kanpur is followed by Faridabad, Varanasi, Gaya, Patna, Delhi, Lucknow, Agra, Muzaffarpur, Srinagar, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Patiala, and Jodhpur. Delhi was one of the most polluted cities in the world until last year. It has managed to come down in a year.
Ali Subah Al Salem of Kuwait, Baoding of China, and Ulaanbaatar of Mongolia are amongst the first 17 most polluted cities of the world.
Beijing was one of the most polluted cities in the world until a few years back. Thanks to the efforts made by the government there, the city is liveable now. The government did this by shutting down many coal factories and putting a limit on the number of private cars that were sold in a year.
In the report, WHO gave a special mention to the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It provided free LPG connections to more than 37 million women across India. That way, they could switch over from the traditional methods like burning wood and charcoal which were harmful to the environment. This has benefited the environment.
Experts point out that this is indeed a national crisis for India. The number of polluted cities is only rising. Unless the government comes forward to take strict action, more people will die due to air pollution and related diseases.
