International Thalassemia Day 2018

International Thalassemia Day (ITD) is observed on 8 May every year.

This year the theme for ITD was chosen through public voting by thalassaemia patients.

The theme for ITD 2018 is Thalassemia Past, Present and Future: Documenting Progress and Patients’ Needs Worldwide

On this day several activities are organized in various parts of the world to create awareness about thalassemia.

Thalassemia is a group of blood disorders that are caused due to hereditary reasons. The main characteristic of thalassemia is an abnormal haemoglobin production.

The shortage of red blood cells in a thalassemic patient can cause major health issues.

Shortage of red blood cells or anaemia can make a person feel tired and weak all the time, affecting day-to-day life.

Thalassemia in children can greatly affect their natural growth process.
