Aadhaar is not mandatory for getting SIM card, says government

Aadhaar is not compulsory if you are getting a SIM card, this has been clarified by the government yesterday.

A SIM card can be issued using alternative identification documents, such as voter ID or driving licence.

The government has also passed on this information to all the Mobile companies in India so that SIM cards can be issued conveniently to the people.

This comes days after the Supreme Court refused to make Aadhaar mandatory for mobile phone users.

This means that now SIM card retailers cannot force customers to submit their Aadhaar details while getting a SIM card.

As per the government’s order, SIM card sellers will have to accept other forms of KYC - know your customer documents and issue SIM cards.

The order is expected to come into effect immediately.
