Protests after Assam minister rebukes retired school teacher for raising questions about state of roads
Residents of Amolapatty in Assam have been suffering for many years due to poor road conditions in their area. A retired school teacher tried to draw attention to this problem during a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Nagaon.
However, while he was speaking, he was forced to cut short his speech by Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain.
When the 75-year-old teacher referred to the bad roads, Gohain got up and blocked the mike in front of the audience. He also scolded the teacher in front of everyone.
The video of this incident has gone viral on social media, leading to protests by students.
Protesters also burnt effigies of the minister in front of his house and demanded an apology for insulting the teacher.
The teacher was called upon to speak at the event as one of the senior citizens of Nagaon. However, he was told by Gohain that he should have come to him personally.
