71-year-old Vivian has not let vision loss come in the way of being a swimming champ!

Vivian Stancil, who is from the United States, got into a swimming pool for the first time when she was 50 years old. She went blind at the age of 19 and had never learned how to swim.

She decided to learn after her doctor told her that she needed to start exercising and get healthy. She was morbidly obese and could barely walk.

Vivian not only learned how to swim and get fit, but she also won over 220 medals. She runs a foundation that offers free swimming lessons to adults and children as well.

Vivian has faced many challenges in her life. She, along with her three siblings, grew up in foster homes after her parents died. She was forced to get married at the age of 16 and had two children.

At the age of 19, she started losing her vision to a genetic condition called retinitis pigmentosa. She went on to do her graduation and become the first and only blind teacher in two school districts.

Everyone is impressed that she can swim so well when she cannot see. She is such an inspiration that she is invited to speak at youth empowerment clinics many times.
