One out of four schizophrenics are at a higher risk of suicide, says new study
Schizophrenia is a very serious mental illness. A recent study has found out that one in four people suffering from schizophrenia may end up committing suicide.
A person can suffer from schizophrenia due to many reasons. Hopelessness, poor health, lack of support from family or friends, isolation and family problems are some of the main reasons. Schizophrenia is a hereditary disorder as well.
Experts say that if this mental illness is not treated, one out of four people who suffer from it are at a risk of ending their lives.
There are many people who do not undertake treatment for schizophrenia, especially in developing countries. Experts assert that almost 90% of schizophrenic people have not undergone any treatment in India.
Most of them fear that their condition is going to get worse. Hence, they decide to commit suicide.
Experts say that there is a myth that schizophrenia cannot be treated. But that is wrong. With proper medical care and counselling, this mental disorder can be treated.
24 May is observed as World Schizophrenia Day. Seminars and workshops are conducted across India to create awareness about this mental disorder.
