All 21 disabilities under law to be covered under National Health Protection Mission
Everyone needs health insurance. In the case of people with disabilities, health insurance is an even more critical need.
Something the government of India has recognised and plans to offer India's disabled population. In an important decision, the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry has said that people with any of the 21 disabilities recognised under law will be covered under the National Health Protection Mission (NHPM).
The NHPM, which is a venture of the central government, is expected to begin on 5 August. The programme is expected to benefit more than 10 crore Indian families.
The scheme is especially important for people with disabilities from poor families. The aim is to offer a cover of Rs five lakh per family on an annual basis.
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) says that the new venture is expected to change the lives of disabled people for good.
The social justice department will also introduce a new tracking system. This new system will help identify disabled people and the type of disability that they have. Authorities from across India will be able get relevant data from this system.
