Trial in the gang rape & murder of 8-year-old Asifa begins in Pathankot
Finally, the wheels of justice start to turn in the brutal gang rape and murder of eight-year-old Asifa. The trial has started in the district court complex of Pathankot.
The rape and murder of the child in Kathua in Jammu had shocked India. The Supreme Court ordered that the trial be moved out of Jammu to ensure it was done fairly.
The case had created a lot of outrage after the accused were supported by many politicians and lawyers in Jammu and Kashmir.
Asifa's father had appealed to the Supreme Court to move the trial out of Jammu and Kashmir. The case will be heard on a day-to-day basis.
Very tight security arrangements have been made around the court complex. There is also a complete ban on carrying of any kind of weapons inside the judicial complex. A metal detector has also been set up outside the courtroom where the trial will be held.
The accused are currently lodged at the Kathua district jail. They may be moved to a local jail in Pathankot, if the judge orders.
