Creating a Unique Style in the Literary World - My Take by Sherin Mary Zacharia

In My Take this week, Sherin Mary Zacharia, an avid reader and author of over four books, writes about how autism has not come in the way of her need for self expression. Sherin, who is just 16 years old, shares her love for literature, and future plans.

I discovered my passion for literature at a very young age. I remember Mama reading out stories to me and my sister Sreya, and I used to be awed by the creativity and depth in those stories. I was as young as seven when I realized my true calling was reading and writing. Since then, there has been no turning back.

My blog is called musingsofsher.in and there I share my thoughts, feelings and ideas of the world around me.

I enjoy writing in Malayalam and English. Both poetry and prose fascinate me so I try my hand at both. I make sure that I update my thoughts and feelings on my blog. It helps me express myself better

Latest work

I have written three books in Malayalam called Mazhavillu (Rainbow), Ente Manassile Chinthakal(Thoughts on my mind) and Snehasammanam(Gift of Love). These were the books through which I ventured into the world of literature.

My latest book is called Moonlight and it was released by the famous Malayalam poet K. Satchidanandan at the Krithi book festival in Kochi in March this year. Moonlight is made up of 18 works, including poems and articles. The book launch was attended by politician Shashi Tharoor. I am a big fan of his and I was thrilled when he said he had read my book and wished me luck!

At present, I am writing a short story on Dussela, who was the sister of the Kauravas in the Mahabharata.

The Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova is my role model. She is the first woman to have flown into space and like her, I love to explore the dark and the unknown.

Support System

My family that is made up of my father, mother, and sister are the biggest support systems. They encourage me to put down my feelings on paper. I love them for that! My Mama has always read out the best stories and poems to me. My grandmother is my biggest inspiration. She is tough, yet gentle. My mother makes sure that all of us in the family are happy and smiling.

My sister is my best friend. A few of her friends have read my book, which is available on Amazon. They read it and told me that they loved my work. I was very happy.

My favourite vacation is at my grandpa’s farm. There are lot of trees there. I love walking amidst those greens. It makes me feel good, and inspires me a lot. Nature is beautiful.

I did my schooling from a special school. I also learnt a few software applications that helped me pen down my thoughts in a better way. Tools like Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Learning Management Systems (LMS) helped me to learn and communicate better.

I am a fan of nature and human feelings. I love going to places filled with people like malls and restaurants. I listen to the radio a lot and watch videos on travel.

I want the world to give more dignity to lesser mortals who might not be as perfect as others. I hope to write more works on humanity and nature. Humans, their feelings and earth are my favourite topics

When you always do or talk something, think about how the other person will feel. I hope I can write more about human emotions and feelings in my forthcoming works.
