Health experts ask Amitabh Bachchan to stop promoting Horlicks

Do celebrities have the duty to be socially responsible while endorsing brands? Over the years, we have seen our popular actors being brand ambassadors for nicotine products, unhealthy drinks and even alcohol! They have ended up in controversies as well. Latest to join the wagon is Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

The actor had recently signed a deal with GSK Consumer Healthcare’s Horlicks milk food drink. Health experts have warned Bachchan to disassociate with the brand as soon as possible.

According to health experts, Horlicks is not an energy drink as claimed by their company. It contains high amounts of carbohydrates and sucrose sugar which is unhealthy for children. It can even lead to obesity in children. They will be prone to non communicable diseases later on in life!

Experts also point out that Horlicks is an expensive drink. Hence, people from economically backward families will not be able to afford it easily. But they are forced to believe that Horlicks is essential for a child’s growth since it is endorsed by celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan. It might even replace healthy home foods which is a threat to the child’s health and nutrition.

Horlicks recently introduced the Horlicks Mission Poshan campaign, supporting the Government’s Rashtriya Poshan Abhiyaan. The mission aims at improving the health of a child in the first 1000 days since its birth. Bachchan has been endorsed as the brand ambassador for this campaign.
