Disabled people can contest cooperative elections in Tamil Nadu

India does not have many disabled leaders. Most of the times, we deny giving opportunities to disabled people. But the government of Tamil Nadu has made a strong statement in support of inclusion, even while choosing their leaders.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has said that disabled people can contest elections to cooperative societies in Tamil Nadu! This definitely is a novel initiative that promotes inclusion.

The Chief Minister said that people have the right to choose their leaders, irrespective of caste, creed and disability. Palaniswamy asserted that those who have the support of masses must come into power. If they have knowledge of the administrative activities and are capable to run it, they will be chosen.

The CM was speaking at a public event when he made these announcements. He also announced the building of a wheelchair ramp at the Velachery police station to help disabled people file complaints.

Other leaders also urged disabled people to join cooperative societies and contest in elections.
