Rajnikanth's latest film, Kaala releases across India today, except in Karnataka

Fans gathered at theatres as early as 4 am to catch the first show of superstar-politician Rajinikanth's film Kaala, which was released across India on Thursday.

However, no theatre in Karnataka screened the film after protests from pro-Kannada activists. Fans in Karnataka plan to travel to Tamil Nadu to watch the movie.

Pro-Kannada groups are upset with Rajinikanth's remarks on the Cauvery water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has said the film should not be released in his state given the tension.

Rajinikanth had said that Karnataka should release Cauvery waters for Tamil Nadu. Mr Kumaraswamy urged Rajinikanth to visit the state and see the condition of farmers and the water level in the dams before commenting on the matter.

The first show of Kaala was in Chennai, followed by Mumbai. The heavy rains here did not keep fans away.

Distributors in Karnataka chose not to show the film even though the High Court gave orders to show the film.
