Disabled boy from Kerala fights for right to education, makes a tremendous win!
Mohammad Asim, a disabled boy from Kozhikode in Kerala was all smiles on Tuesday. He has won his right to pursue higher education!
Asim was born with no hands and a 90% disability. The young boy lives in a small panchayat in Kozhikode with only one nearby school which is the Velimanna Government Mappila UP School. But this school, where Asim was pursuing his education till class 7 does not have classes from 8th standard onwards.
Asim, who knew that education was his birth right under the Right to Education Act, filed a petition at the high court of Kerala in order to begin classes for 8th standard at his school!
Yes, Asim has emerged successful! The court has asked concerned authorities to provide all facilities to start 8th standard at Asim’s school from this academic year onwards. The court also ordered to build a playground at the school.
Asim’s father said that if the court did not order this, Asim would have had to stop his education. The nearest school was 5 kms away from their home. Lack of transport to reach the school and low income of the family would not have let Asim continue his studies.
More than 134 similar petitions were filed at the Kerala high court. But the high court decided to act fast o Asim’s petition since the academic year has already begun!
Even though Asim had to stage many protests and knock many doors of government offices, he has fought for his right and grabbed it.
Asim is all set to walk into his new class and spread wings to the world of education.
