Antipsychotic drugs can lead to obesity and diabetes, says new study
In today’s world, people are forced to have medicines for different ailments. Those with mental health problems have to take medicines for a longer period of time. A recent study has found out that antipsychotic drugs can have a negative impact on the health of both children and adults.
The study points out that usage of antipsychotic drugs can lead to diabetes and even obesity. These drugs increase body fat and lead to reducing the body’s sensitivity to insulin.
Most of the times, antipsychotic drugs are used to treat schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Experts say that this becomes tough on the doctor as well. In spite of knowing that the drug has side effects, the doctor has to prescribe it to the patient who has a disorder.
Hence, doctors are more wary and cautious while prescribing drugs to patients. Children are constantly monitored for their body weight if they are prescribed antipsychotic drugs.
