Schizophrenia among major causes of suicide in some parts of the world
As per a new study done in Canada, people with schizophrenia account for more than 1 in 10 cases of suicide in Toronto.
The data also revealed that 12% of all suicide cases involved a diagnosis of schizophrenia and 1% of the population in the region has the disorder.
The age of the suicide victims with schizophrenia were very young people and most of them were in the age group of 25 and 34 years.
90% of the suicide cases were also found to have links to mental illness. People who commit suicide are mostly undergoing severe depression.
Lack of awareness about mental health leads to extreme steps being taken by the individuals. Timely intervention can help save lives and it is vital that mental illness is recognized as a serious issue.
