Plastic ban starts in Maharashtra

Plastic ban has come into effect in the state of Maharashtra from yesterday.

The ban was announced by the Maharashtra government in March this year. Three months’ time was given for the disposal of existing stocks.

People violating the plastic ban will be fined ₹5,000 and ₹10,000 for the first-time and second-time offence respectively.

The third time violation will be strict and call for a ₹25,000 fine and a three-month long jail term.

The government is to launch a campaign that will be carried out for eight days to spread awareness about the banned plastic items.

One-time-use bags, spoons, plates, PET and PETE bottles and thermocol items have been banned.

As per the government 80% of banned plastic items are manufactured in Gujarat and smuggled to Maharashtra state.
