All India Institute of Medical Sciences to open an exclusive centre for the elderly
Every day, we hear reports of elderly people being harassed or sexually abused by their family members or even strangers. Many of them are abandoned after they fall sick since their family finds it difficult to manage them. Isn’t it high time that our country owns exclusive centres to take care of elderly?
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi is gearing up to open a National Centre for Ageing (NCA) inside their campus. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the centre on Saturday.
An official from AIIMS said that India is home to millions of elderly people. It is three times more than America and next highest after China! Hence, catering to needs of the elderly is very important. Trained professionals will provide the best clinical service under fixed guidelines for elderly who visit the centre.
According to reports, NCA will host 200 general ward beds, 20 ICU medical beds, 10 pre-operative beds and post-operative beds each, along with 15 post-operative ICU beds. In addition, there will be 20 paid ward beds as well.
This new venture by the government will improve the standards of living for many senior citizens who cannot even get basic clinical help and care.
