Sanitary pad vending machines to be installed across 9 prisons in Maharashtra
The Maharashtra State Commission for Women wants to ensure that women inmates of prisons have access to better health standards. Hence, they are going to launch sanitary pad vending machines across nine jails in Maharashtra!
The commission has already installed a vending machine at the Kolhapur woman prison. They will soon install it in Yerwada, Thane, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Amravati, Kalyan, Byculla and Chandrapur prisons in a month’s time. Authorities will also ensure that there are facilities to dispose the sanitary napkins after usage.
The sanitary pads will be priced at Rs 2 and Rs 5. It might even be given for free! The women's commission has left it to the jail authorities to decide the rates for the sanitary pads.
Last year, a woman prisoner from the Byculla jail in Mumbai died under mysterious circumstances. Following this, the Supreme Court (SC) asked concerned authorities to look into the infrastructure in prisons and provide basic amenities to inmates. This new initiative is done as part of the SC order.
There are thousands of women prisoners across these nine jails. This initiative will hopefully help them to gain access to better health facilities.
