What is metastatic cancer?

In a sad development, this week Bollywood actor Sonali Bendre had announced on social media that she has been diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Since then many are wondering what that is.

In India, there are many people who are affected by different types of cancer. The numbers are rising rapidly. Reports say that at least seven lakh new cases are being registered in India every year. It accounts to 50% of the total deaths.

Experts say that metastatic cancer is the term used for cancer that has already spread to different parts of the body from where it started. It is often stage 4 or an advanced stage.

The cancer cells become strong enough to spread to other parts of the body from where it originated. It usually spreads through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. These cells settle in different parts of the body and cause tumours.

Some of the symptoms of metastatic cancer are headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, vision problems, difficulty in movement, and extreme pain in different parts of the body.

Treatment of metastatic cancer varies in people depending on their age, health and other such factors.
