ISRO does India proud again, test of first escape crew system is successful!
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)is a world class research organization, that has successfully tested many space experiments.
Now it has added another feather to its cap. It successfully tested its first crew escape system on Thursday! This pad abort test is important for a human spaceflight programme. This one-of-its-kind test is being conducted in India for the first time.
ISRO revealed that this new crew escape system is an emergency escape measure that has been designed to quickly pull out the crew module along with the astronauts to a safe distance in case there is a launch abort.
The test was conducted at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at Andhra Pradesh. Officials said that the test lasted for over 259 seconds and the five-hour countdown for the experiment went off in a smooth manner.
It covered an altitude of 2.9 kms before entering the Bay of Bengal on parachutes, and then back to Earth.
