Government or private universities cannot hike fees on their own will, says Supreme Court

Students of Annamalai University of Tamil Nadu were upset over the extreme hike in medical fees levied by the university. Now, the Supreme Court has turned in favour of the students. The court clearly said that private or government universities cannot hike education fees under their own will without consulting the concerned committees.

More than 150 students had filed a petition against Annamalai University for hiking medical fee for the MBBS course for the 2013-2014 academic sessions.

In 2003, Supreme Court had clearly stated that every state must have an independent Committee on Fee Fixation which will be headed by a retired high court judge. What Annamalai University did was clearly a breach of this law!

Initially, the petitioner’s had moved to Madras High Court for imposing more than Rs 5 lakh as fees for a year. The plea was rejected by the court and they moved the case to Supreme Court.

The students claim that justice has been finally served to them!
