Parliament passes bill to punish bribe givers and takers
The Parliament has passed an anti-corruption Bill that is aimed to curb the practice of bribing in the country.
The Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2018 contains the provision of punishment for people who take bribe as well as those who give bribes.
As per the bill, people who are caught taking bribes will face imprisonment from three to seven years along with fine. People who are found guilty of giving bribes will imprisonment of upto seven years, and may be fined as well.
This is the first time that the anti-corruption bill has included punishment for bribe givers.
The government claims that the bill amendments will ensure the safety of officers who perform their duties with honesty.
The opposition did let the bill to be passed, however, concerns were raised about making the anti-corruption laws less severe.
