Lack of special educators hit thousands of children with special needs in Chandigarh
Children with special needs at Chandigarh are undergoing a hard time due to government apathy. There are more than 5000 children with special needs enrolled into various government schools in Chandigarh UT. The lack of special educators puts their academics at jinx! In spite of the education board demanding for at least 194 special educators, both state and central governments are giving a deaf ear to this demand.
Currently, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha have provided 25 special educators for Chandigarh. But that is a meagre figure when compared to the large number of children with special needs.
Authorities had sent an initial proposal on December 2017, and followed up a few times. But there has been no response from the government’s end putting the future of thousands of children with special needs at stake!
Since 2015, The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had made it mandatory that all CBSE schools must have at least one special educator. There are children with autism, other developmental disorders, learning disabilities and cerebral palsy who need utmost care and attention. Only a qualified educator will be able to help them.
The insensitivity of the government is making things worse for these children with special needs in Chandigarh.
