Tamil Nadu government extends marriage aid for more disabled people

Here is some good news for disabled couples in Tamil Nadu who are gearing up to get married. Now, disabled people under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPWD) can avail government benefits that include financial aid and a gold thali (mangalsutra) for their wedding!

This new rule has been implemented across the state from 1 August. Before that, people with no disabilities who are marrying blind or deaf people and those with loco motor disabilities could avail this benefit. Two disabled people marrying each other were also eligible for this scheme.

Earlier, the government had hiked financial aid from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 for those who have completed their diploma or graduate courses. The quantum of gold chain for ‘thali’ was also raised to 8 gms from 4 gms!

Those who have not yet completed their diploma or graduation can avail Rs 25,000 and a gold chain of 4 gms. The government said that this initiative would promote education amongst disabled people.

It was in 1986 that the state government decided to first introduce these schemes and benefits for disabled people who are marrying someone from their own community or another person with no disabilities.

This new government move was cheered by many disabled people across the state.
