Justice still remains distant dream for Kerala nun who was raped by Bishop

Recently, a nun from Kerala had accused Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal of repeatedly raping her between years 2014 and 2016. But in spite of proof against the Bishop, police have refused to arrest him. This has infuriated many activists, women welfare organizations and certain sections of the church. Due to public outrage, Kerala police has agreed to question the Bishop, which is most likely to happen on 19 September.

Kerala police had already questioned the Bishop last month at Jalandhar. But they said that there were discrepancies in what was told by the Bishop and nun. The police have identified that the Bishop was not in Kerala on the dates where the nun said that she was raped.

Meanwhile, the nun has already sent a complaint to Apostolic Nuncio, who is the representative of India from the Vatican. In the letter, she mentioned that the Bishop and his allies are using money and influence of the church to keep the case under wraps. The nun alleged that the Bishop, along with two other priests and his relative offered her Rs 5 crore to withdrew the case!

The nun said that she has been facing discrimination and mental abuse from various people inside and outside the church due to her complaint. She was humiliated and insulted many times and she is now considered to be an enemy of the Catholic Church. The nun pleaded that she wants justice at any cost.

Kerala police said that the case could not be investigated strongly last month due to the Kerala floods. Kerala Director General of Police will hold a high end meeting to verify the case and to take it forward.
