Earthquake hits Assam, tremors felt in nearby states as well

An earthquake, measuring magnitude of 5.5 in Richter scale hit Assam at around 10.20 am on Wednesday morning. No casualties were reported. Even though the earthquake hit Kokrajhar in Assam, tremors were felt in many north-eastern cities and even parts of West Bengal.

Tremors were felt in Kolkata, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, Malda and Mushidabad in West Bengal. In Bihar, people experienced tremors at Patna, Krishnaganj, Purnea and Katihar. Tremors were reported in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh as well. Nagaland is still under the wrath of floods that caused havoc in the state. Tremors were experienced there as well.

According to reports, the earthquake struck at a magnitude of 13 kms from the surface of earth. Tremors lasted for around 15 to 20 seconds.

Social media was flooded with warning messages, tweets and posts from across the country. People fled offices and homes, especially high rise buildings, soon after they experienced tremors. Many public spaces and buildings were evacuated after reports of earthquake came out.
