All 17 accused to likely get a death penalty in rape of deaf girl from Chennai
In July this year, the shocking report of a 12-year-old deaf girl being brutally raped by over 17 men came to light. The incident happened at an apartment complex in Chennai where the maintenance staff used to repeatedly rape the girl.
All the accused are likely to get the death penalty for this crime.
Special Public Prosecutor N Ramesh has filed a chargesheet under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The act states that criminals who come under the POSCO act must be given a rigorous imprisonment of 20 years and maximum death penalty under sections 376 AB and 376 DB.
The teenager was sedated with soft drinks, certain powders and injections by the security, plumbers, carpenters and lift maintenance staff. The child finally described her ordeal in sign language to her elder sister who came from Delhi.
All of the 17 accused were produced before the court of 17 July. They were dragged down the stairs and beaten up by the lawyers at the court.
The report of the sustained abuse suffered by a deaf teenager in Chennai had touched the hearts of people from all across India.
There were protests from different cities like Delhi, Assam and Mumbai demanding tough action.
