Supreme Court allows green firecrackers between 8 pm to 10 pm

October 24, 2018

It is that time of the year when firecrackers are going to be burst throughout the day. Diwali is round the corner! When we celebrate the festival of lights with firecrackers, we do not realise the pollution and harmful effects that follows. A group of activists had filed a petition to ban sale of firecrackers. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court passed a verdict saying that firecrackers cannot be completely banned. Instead, green firecrackers, that are less harmful to environment, can be used across the country. They can be burst only between 8pm and 10pm. Violation of this rule is punishable under law.

The Supreme Court also said that online commercial websites like Flipkart and Amazon must refrain from selling firecrackers. These websites will have to undergo trial if they fail. The court added that during Christmas and New Year's Eve, firecrackers can be used from 11.30 pm to 12.30 am.

The court clearly stated that loud firecrackers are banned. Apart from causing environmental pollution, they also cause health problems to people, especially those living in cities.

There is no doubt that firecrackers add to celebratory mood during Diwali. But due to this, the air that we breathe becomes extremely polluted. How effective are these 'green' firecrackers? We need to wait and see that!
