Andhra Pradesh politician Jaganmohan Reddy stabbed by man taking selfie with him
October 26, 2018
Jaganmohan Reddy, the Andhra Pradesh politician, suffered a shock after he was stabbed by an employee of the Vishakhapatnam airport while he was waiting for a flight.
Reddy suffered minor injuries after he was stabbed by a man J Sriniwas Rao, who claimed to be his fan. The YSR Congress leader had blood on his left shoulder after he was stabbed by a small blade.
He later tweeted:
Such cowardice acts will not dissuade me but only strengthen my resolve to work for the people of my state. - Jagan Reddy, Opposition leader, Andhra Pradesh
The attacker entered the VIP lounge where Reddy was waiting to serve coffee and approached him asking for a selfie. Reddy agreed and Sriniwas allegedly pretended to take a picture and then attacked him with the knife. Police say that it appears it was an act done for publicity.
While the injury is not life-threatening, it exposes the poor security in the airport where each visitor is checked with metal detectors.
Union Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu has asked for a thorough investigation. He tweeted, "I am shocked by attack on Mr Jagan Reddy. Asked all agencies to investigate matter thoroughly, including @CISFHQrs. Asked secretary civil aviation to fix responsibility. I strongly condemn this cowardly attack, we will punish the guilty. Investigations are underway, started immediately."
Reddy was on a march in a district as part of his 2019 polls campaign and had come to Vizag to catch the flight.
