Elderly couple's IVF baby starts ethical debate
An Amritsar-based elderly couple's decision to have a baby through fertility treatment has started off a debate on the need to regulate assisted technologies like in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).
The couple, who are in their seventies, had the baby to inherit property worth nearly Rs 5 crore that was being denied to them by relatives as they had no childen. While there is no law in India against older couples using IVF treatment to conceive, the guidelines advise women over 50 and men over 55 against the procedure as it is a high-risk pregnancy for mother and child.
The couple had adopted a son who ran away after discovering the truth about his birth. There are also issues like who will take care of the child after his parents' time, given their advanced years.
