January 25, 2019
Mohammed Shami has set a record with his brilliant performance in the first one day match against New Zealand. He has become the fastest Indian bowler to take 100 wickets in One-day Internationals.
The earlier record was held by Irfan Pathan. Shami overtook Pathan when he removed opener Martin Guptill in his first over. Shami got to the milestone in his 56th ODI while Pathan did it in 59 matches.
The other Indian bowlers to take the fastest 100 wickets are Zaheer Khan (65 ODIs), Ajit Agarkar (67) and Javagal Srinath (68 ODIs) .
Shami took to Twitter to celebrate his performance. "Thank You One & All for the Support✌ðŸ», Wishes🤞ðŸ», Prayers ðŸ™ðŸ»& Enduring Trust on me through thick & thin times ☀🌪⛈â" as a Player & a Person. I Dedicate this feat ðŸŽ-ðŸ'¯ to my angel ðŸ'¼ðŸ» Daughter.🇮🇳ðŸ'ðŸ'"
Captain Virat Kohli had high praise for Shami's performance.
The fast bowling group together believes they can knock any side over. And the belief in his own ability and his fitness - this is the fittest I've seen him in his career. And his Test form has translated into one-day cricket. - Virat Kohli, India cricket captain
Shami, who plays domestic cricket for West Bengal, has been plagued with injuries. On the international level, he is tied with New Zealand pacer Trent Boult as the sixth fastest to the same landmark in terms of matches played.
Shami has been in terrific form for India ever since he made a comeback in the One-day side in Australia earlier this month. He was the fourth most successful bowler in Australia, bagging 5 wickets in 3 matches.
