Government appoints new CBI chief

Putting an end to days of speculation and suspense, Rishi Kumar Shukla has been appointed the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation- CBI.
Rishi Kumar Shukla is a 1983-batch officer and has earlier served as the Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police.
The appointment of Shukla as the director of CBI was announced through a government notification. Shukla was selected from a list of 30 candidates by a committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As per the notification, Rishi Kumar Shukla will head the CBI for the next two years.
CBI director's name was announced by the government after the Supreme Court slammed the government for delaying the appointment.
Former head of CBI, Alok Verma has quit his post amidst political drama and fight with his deputy IPS officer Rakesh Asthana. Both men had accused each other of corruption and misuse of post.
In absence of Alok Verma, M Nageswara Rao had been working as the temporary head of CBI.
The appointment of Rishi Kumar Shukla has been objected to by the opposition parties.
