Mamata Banerjee-Centre clash continues

February 5, 2019

Mamata Banerjee, who is on an indefinite protest in Kolkata over a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into a scam involving members of her party, has been accused by the Centre of blocking the investigation.

This is after CBI officers were detained when they went to the house of Rajeev Kumar, the Kolkata Police Commissioner, to question him about evidence allegedly missing. Banerjee gas accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of political revenge.

Banerjee tweeted,

The Kolkata Police Commissioner is among the best in the world. His integrity, bravery and honesty are unquestioned. -Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister, West Bengal

Union Minister Smriti Irani questioned why a chief minister is protesting for a police officer. "The fact that paramilitary forces had to be deployed for the protection of those officers, who were diligently doing their duty, is for the first time an unprecedented view given to the citizen with regards to the state of anarchy in Bengal".

Banerjee has dared the Centre to place the state under President's Rule and criticized the CBI. "How dare you come to a police commissioner's home without a warrant? Mr (Ajit) Doval is doing whatever PM wants him to do, he is the one giving all the instructions to CBI," referring to the National Security Advisor.

Banerjee has accused the BJP of gunning for her administration after her rally of 23 opposition parties in Kolkata last month.
