In an unfortunate incident, two aircrafts of the Surya Kiran Aerobatics Team crashed on Tuesday at Bengaluru's Yelahanka Air Force Station during rehearsals for Aero India 2019. There were three pilots who met with the crash. While two ejected safely, one died in the crash. A civilian was also injured after the debris of the aircrafts landed near the ISRO layout in Yelahanka New Town.
Concerned over the mid-air collision and crash of #SuryaKiran jets at #Yelahanka airbase in #Bengaluru, during rehearsal for #AeroIndia2019. Relieved to know that the pilots are safe. I pray for their speedy recovery-Ashok Gehlot, Chief Minister of Rajasthan
Experts point out that the reason for the crash must be a technical glitch of the jets. One was flying on top of the other when the accident happened. Reportedly, the two pilots who escaped used parachutes to eject themselves from the crash.
Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also visited the crash site on Tuesday. The incident took place around 11.50 am during the practice sessions.
