Drinking water in Chennai homes by 2024: Centre

Chennai is undergoing its worst water crisis after almost all its reservoirs dried up in the scorching heat. The crisis has garnered international attention with Hollywood actors like Leonardo Dicaprio discussing about the issue in their social media. Amidst the ongoing crisis, central government has promised clean drinking water to every household of Chennai by 2024. While speaking at the Rajya Sabha, Minister of Jal Shakthi Gajendra Singh Shekhawat assured this.
Shekhawat said that the ministry is going to look into ways to conserve water and curb extraction of underground water. Ministers from both Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra which is facing water crisis, spoke about the plight of people at Rajya Sabha.

In the mid of June this year, many hotels and public places in Chennai had to shut down due to lack of availability drinking water. Most of the people had to depend on tanker water for which the prices shot up during the crisis. The government told tanker lorry owners to refrain from charging a bomb and not to exploit the situation. Drinking water is being sent to Chennai from different parts of the world.
