Supreme Court serves notice to 6 states over mental health

The Supreme Court of India has asked six states to respond to a petition seeking the release of nearly 300 people who are still living in mental hospitals in Uttar Pradesh despite being cured.

Notices have been given to Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya on a petition seeking the release of former patients who are now cured.

Many cured mental patients are left in hospitals as there is no policy to ensure their well being after the release.
