Madurai school gets model toilet for students with disabilities

A model toilet was launched for students with disabilities at a school in Madurai in Tamil Nadu. The aim is to encourage more students with disabilities to attend the regular schooling system.

Children with disabilities, like movement disorders and mental disabilities, stay away from schools, were the availability of toilets that suit their needs.

The school in Madurai has fifteen students with physical disabilities and was thus chosen.The toilet has a wider entrance than other toilets allowing for free movement of wheelchairs. It has hand railings for the children to help themselves in and out and waterproof tiles on the floor.

The integrated education programme specifies that all children should have access to education, even schools run under the programme turn away such children, often citing infrastructure problems as a reason.
